RAW HYPNOTIC INSTRUMENTAL GROOVES THAT PLANT IN YOUR PSYCHE
Hip hop is over 50 years old. Since its inception in the early 70s, people have been looping drum breaks, chopping up samples, and pushing the sound in new directions. Out of those humble beginnings, the genre has grown to dominate mainstream culture. That expansion is due in part to producers like Doctor Bionic. Led by Jason Grimez, the group is always hard at work on a new mixtape of fresh, organic grooves. As the newest addition to the D.B.’s ever- growing catalog, The Beat Zealot is here to connect with lifelong instrumental lovers and convert new listeners all over the globe.
Grimez is a beat fanatic. Born and raised in South Florida, he drew inspiration from entertainers and DJs like Jam Pony Express. As a teenager, Grimez would spend hours at the flea market, flipping through catalogs and picking up tapes for his collection. He relocated to Ohio in the 90s, where he fell in love with sampling and began producing music of his own.
For each Doctor Bionic record, Grimez pulls in a cast of highly talented musicians from the local scene. The Beat Zealot features some familiar names like Brian Batchelor-Glader and Marvin Hawkins, as well as some new players who stepped into Doctor Bionic’s studio for the first time. Keith Humphrey laid down the beautiful guitar riff on “Vast World,” and Dione Howard performed the unique drum pattern on “Mystery of the Cosmos.”
In the studio, the group of musicians toss out ideas and improvise while Grimez runs the board.Later, he arranges the tracks and establishes a theme for a full-length record. “I’m always working on an album, but sometimes I’m not sure what the artwork or title will be,” Grimez explained. The art often inspires the overall message, which is reflected in short interludes of vocal samples interspersed between the instrumental jams.
The cover of The Beat Zealot features a lone adventurer standing on a mountain that overlooks a distant city. Is he on his way toward civilization, or is he fleeing? The album offers no definitive answers, but it does provide plenty of inspiration for the curious listener. So, turn up the tunes and let your mind write the rest of the story. Tune in for more instant classics from Doctor Bionic when The Beat Zealot is released via Chiefdom Records on 12/11/2026.
