Ghost Funk Orchestra (GFO) returns to our orbit with Yours in The Ranks of Death, their most grounded and personal collection of songs to date. Reflective and ethereal, the fifth full-length album from Ghost Funk Orchestra finds composer/mastermind Seth Applebaum paring down the sounds and conceptual underpinnings — providing his signature grooves a cleaner pocket to glide across the turntable. Like a summer sun's rays slowly atomizing morning fog, what comes into sharper relief are the angles and crystalline figures that have made Ghost Funk Orchestra the groovy modern psychedelic soul jazz boogaloo backbone of Karma Chief Records since joining the label in 2018.
"I wanted to focus more on the rhythm section...like getting the grooves to feel and letting them just exist for a while, rather than trying to bounce around,” says Applebaum. Setting the stage for a solid foundation meant constructing and recording compositions with a nod to earlier GFO albums, but this process isn't simply a revisiting of old ways. Yours in the Ranks of Death represents refining GFO’s voice and sound, shaped by nearly a decade of one-man-improv headphone orchestrations and an ever-expanding palate of sounds and hands to breathe life into notes.
While the instrumentation still retains its sultry confidence, pulsing through the gauzy atmosphere with GFO's signature feel, it's the lyrics where Yours in The Ranks of Death reveals its most confessional tones.
Along with the stripping back of sonic interludes and the use of sampled effects, Applebaum offers some of his most personal lyrics throughout the album. "King of the Lower East Side" helps to identify the spiritual center of both the album and the band's catalog, Applebaum's late uncle Matthew.
"He was an amateur poet, but dedicated to the craft," explains Applebaum. "He's been a reference point for a lot of Ghost Funk stuff... So he's been an influential character."
It would be easy to mistake the sharper focus of Yours in The Ranks of Death as an exercise in concision… until you hear a track like “A Vision of Crimson.” One of the longest and most ambitious songs in the Ghost Funk repertoire, the 7-minute closing opus is as expansive as any from Ghost Funk Orchestra, shaping its strut with a gradual sweep and swirling interplay of brass and winds that marries Return to Forever with Joe Bataan’s Fania-fed soul, with a blended sound that only putting live horns into a room together can offer. Zivic handles the lead vocals on “Crimson” as well as “Where Is My Love" and “Ocotillo.”
From the vocalists to the horns, Applebaum made sure this album was cast with some of his touring musicians in mind. “Both of their voices [Hartman and Zivic] are incredible…when I was casting these songs, I wanted to make sure that these singers who have been performing with us live on a pretty regular basis feel like they have some kind of ownership in the project,” says Applebaum. “Similarly with the horns, it’s like I put together a section of all the horn players that have been regular parts of the live band as of late…It’s like this is my world; I invite a few people in at a time…so that they feel a little bit less like just hired guns for the live show.”
From the mind of Seth Applebaum to the mixing desk at his home studio, the path Ghost Funk Orchestra traverses on Yours in the Ranks of Death keeps the journey moving forward while traveling inward. You would be hard-pressed to find introspection this propulsive, poetic, or funky.
